    Duties & Responsibilities

    Medical Science & Computing is searching for a Laboratory Technician to provide support to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This opportunity is a full-time position with MSC and it is on-site in Bethesda, Maryland.


    • 40%    Experiments involving animals, including stretching, surgery, injections, behavioral testing, ultrasound imaging, tissue dissection, sample collection, storage and organization.
    • 35%    Laboratory experimentation and data collection involving animal tissue:  histology, histochemistry, flow cytometry, microscopy, Tissue culture, image analysis, ELISA, cytokine array analysis, QPCR
    • 10%    Documentation and data safeguarding:  protocol writing, maintaining lab notebooks, entering data into spreadsheets, preparing reports and data summaries, graphing for presentations and publications of materials.
    • 5%     General laboratory maintenance:  glassware cleaning, general lab cleaning and other responsibilities assigned
    • 5%     Laboratory meetings:  group meetings, meeting with principal investigator.
    • 5%     Experimental design of protocols, literature searches, library searches


    • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Life Sciences or a related discipline
    • 1 - 2 years of directly related experience.  Prior experience working with laboratory animals (rats and/or mice) is required.
    • Ability to work well with a team, as well as independently.
    • Experience with general laboratory techniques (biochemistry, histology).
    • Must be comfortable working with animals, including euthanasia.
    • Experience with ultrasound imaging is desirable but not required.
    • Must have excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
    • Ability to prioritize tasks and set deadlines.
    • Ability to identify problems and develop solutions.
    • High degree of computer literacy.
    • Ability to demonstrate professionalism and respect for individuals.
    • Familiarity and facility with various software packages for processing and analyzing physiological data is desired, but not required.
