    Duties & Responsibilities

    Medical Science & Computing is searching for a Laboratory Technician to provide support to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).  This opportunity is full-time with MSC and it is on-site in Bethesda, Maryland.


    • Perform a wide variety of procedures and techniques which may include, but are not limited to: cell culture, quantitative PCR, clinical/diagnostic microbiology, DNA analysis, DNA isolation, DNA purification, DNA sequencing, gene cloning, natural product isolation, organic synthesis, oligonucleotide synthesis, protein analysis, RNA isolation, etc.
    • Perform sequence analysis or quantitative PCR of research scientist-supplied samples.
    • Maintain detailed records of experiments and their results and prepare the information resulting from these experiments for presentations at laboratory-wide meetings and for publication.
    • Perform quality control of the laboratory.
    • Generate laboratory records to support laboratory research, and independently perform necessary calculations.
    • Write report(s) of findings, stating methods and procedures, including any modifications employed, specimens and materials involved, and results of experiments.
    • Interpret, evaluate, and discuss the results of each experiment with the supervisor as part of the planning process for subsequent studies, and present these findings in individual weekly meetings with supervisor as well as lab group meetings.
    • Provide training to students and other laboratory personnel in the use of sophisticated laboratory equipment and in the performance of specialized procedures, techniques, etc.
    • Responsible for laboratory upkeep and routine maintenance of equipment. Maintain laboratory supplies and equipment including chemicals, biological materials, etc.
    • Required to handle biological materials, carcinogens, recombinant protein materials, acids, biological wastes, etc.
    • Review and research the proper handling and methods of utilization for different biological and chemical materials in regular use in the laboratory.
    • Prepare various media, stock supplies and other reagents for use in the laboratory.
    • Order and maintain laboratory supplies and equipment including chemicals, biological materials, liquid nitrogen, etc., upon government approval.



    • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or related field.
    • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in cell culture, PCR, DNA workups and sequencing, cloning, and flow cytometry.
    • Demonstrated experience working in a laboratory environment.
    • Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate and detailed records.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of proper laboratory disposal methods and safety procedures.
    • Willing to learn principles of molecular biology, genetics, systems biology, and immunology.
