    Duties & Responsibilities

    Medical Science & Computing is searching for a Medical Ontology Research Programmer to support the National Institutes of Health. This opportunity is full-time, presently slated to last one year with the potential for longer and it is on-site in Bethesda, MD. 


    The Medical Ontology Research (MOR) project requires the services of an experienced programmer to develop and maintain software tools in support of research at the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications (LHNCBC), National Library of Medicine (NLM). Programming support is needed to enhance existing software applications as well as develop new applications that utilize emerging standards and technologies. Strong communications skills as well as the ability to work independently will be needed in our research and development environment.


    • Formal education (minimum: Bachelor’s degree) in Computer Science
    • Experience with two or more operating systems (including Linux and Windows), with some System Administration experience
    • Experience with client/server programming
    • Fluent in at least two programming languages (including Java)
    • Experience with database administration and programming (preferably MySQL)
    • Experience administering web servers (Apache HTTP and Tomcat)
    • Familiarity with source configuration management/version management
    • Experience in a research and development (R&D) environment with demonstrated ability to analyze problems and propose multiple solutions
    • Demonstrated ability to write clear, correct, complete, understandable reports and documentation
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently
    • Excellent presentation and interpersonal skills

    Desired Skills

    • Experience with web development technologies such as JavaScript, jQuery and Ajax.
    • Experience with container technology such as Docker.
    • Experience with Semantic Web technologies (RDF/S, OWL), ontology editors (e.g., Protégé), RDF triple stores (e.g., Virtuoso) and Web Services
    • Ability to maintain awareness of state-of-the-art in Semantic Web technologies
    • Fluent with Java and Python
    • Experience with XQuery, XPath, XSLT processors and SVG
    • Experience with Concurrent Versions System (CVS)
    • Excellent writing skills, or awards for writing
