    Duties & Responsibilities

    We are currently searching for a Scientific Laboratory and Operations Manager to support the National Institutes of Health. This position is full-time and it is onsite at NIH in Gaithersburg, MD


    Duties and Responsibilities:


    1. Assists in the development of research and operational initiatives to support laboratory aspects of the Section.
    2. Assists Lab Chief with preparation of laboratory reviews and other documentation of strategic importance to the lab.
    3. Supports the development and implementation of mammalian and bacterial based expression systems for recombinant protein and purification and characterization using FPLC chromatographic techniques.
    4. Designs and executes biophysical assays including gel filtration, multi-angle light scattering, surface plasmon resonance, analytical ultracentrifugation, ELISA, and fluorescent based assays.
    5. Mentors undergraduates and post-doctoral fellows daily in the development and implementation of research projects and specific scientific techniques.
    6. Works with the lab staff in the preparation of reports and presentations.
    7. Explores and makes recommendations on alternatives to improve the management and utilization of laboratory resources, personnel and equipment.
    8. Investigates cost-effective mechanisms for the procurement and maintenance of specialized lab services.
    9. Oversees the accomplishment of office functions relative to facility renovations, space allocations, and procurement.




    1. Experience in developing, evaluating, and conducting research studies and supporting laboratory operational activities.
    2. Experience with biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology, microbiology, molecular biology, protein chemistry, and organic chemistry techniques including cloning, tissue culture, radio labeling, cell differentiation, and organic synthesis.
    3. Proficient with a wide variety of instrumentation including fluorescent microscopy, analytical ultracentrifugation, liquid handling robots, and FPLC.
    4. Proficient with tissue culture and molecular cellular biology including fluorescent staining, immuno­precipitation, transient transfection, cell differentiation, RNAi, and flow cytometry.
    5. Experience with antibody production and purification projects which include: antigen development, monoclonal antibody development, culturing hybridomas, antibody affinity purification, expression of recombinant antibodies, and purification of antibody/antigen complexes for structural and biochemical characterization.
    6. Highly motivated and proactive individual with the ability to perform routine and non-routine tasks with a high degree of reproducibility and reliability
    7. Ability to meet deadlines and work in a team environment.
    8. Detail-oriented, multi-tasking individual who is comfortable working independently and exercising judgment in a fast-paced, growing organization.
    9. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
    10. Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project and Outlook.
    11. Exceptional organization and customer service skills.


    1. Science background and experience in structural biology (protein crystallization and data collection, multi-angle light scattering, small angle x-ray scattering, and analytical ultracentrifugation) preferred.
    1. Develops lab infrastructure for the effective conduct of laboratory scientific programs.
    2. Possesses a high degree of initiative, personal judgment, and scientific expertise in developing instructions, policy interpretations, and revising approaches to fit unique and complex situations.          


    Minimum of ten years related experience. BS/BA degree with greater than 5 years of relevant experience or Master’s Degree.
