    Duties & Responsibilities

    Medical Science & Computing is searching for a Storage Engineer to support enterprise storage systems at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This opportunity is a permanent, full-time position with MSC and it is on-site in Bethesda, Maryland.

     

    Duties & Responsibilities:

    • Support and maintain multi-terabyte-scale disk storage including, but not limited to Storage Area Network (SAN) and Network Attached Storage (NAS).
    • Monitor storage systems 24/7; provide information and statistics relevant to system limits on capacity, data storage, system utilization, etc.; report issues and concerns to the COR; take pre-emptive corrective action as required to minimize system crashes and data loss; recommend enhancements and changes aimed at improving performance and sustainability.
    • Operate and maintain large storage arrays: NetApp, EMC Isilon, VNX, EMC UNITY, Dell Equallogic. Apply regular upgrades and patches to all storage platforms as required.
    • Manage SMB, and NFS shares in support of general and scientific storage for active and disaster recovery/failover replication sites.
    • Support near-time data replication to disaster recovery/failover sites using Recover Point.
    • Support pilot initiatives related to implementing and evaluating Nexenta Software Designed Storage as a potential NAS, Block and Object storage solution for backing up individual user workstations and hosting private research cloud storage.
    • Review and assess storage systems performance; troubleshoot and resolve issues as required, and propose and implement changes aimed at continuous improvement.
    • Manage enterprise backups tools like CommVault or NetBackup.

    Requirements

     

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or other related business, scientific, or technical discipline
    • Experience supporting Windows, Mac, and Linux systems in a complex research-based 24/7 enterprise environment with demonstrated ability to analyze problems and propose multiple alternative solutions
    • Strong knowledge of both SMB and NFS protocols is required. Experience supporting both Windows and Linux in an enterprise environment is required.
    • Knowledge and experience in enterprise storage and backup tools to include CommVault backup solutions, NetBackup.
    • Experience with NetApp and EMC Isilon clusters in a large enterprise environment is preferred.
    • Knowledge and experience in managing Brocade Fiber channel switches and be able to create zones, upgrade FOS, troubleshoot any FC issues
    • Experience with hardware and software for networking; distributed computing; virtualization; large-scale, high-performance storage systems; databases; and cloud computing
    • Ability to provide excellent customer service in managing user facing tasks such as data transfers, restores, and permissions management
    • Applicable certifications to demonstrate technical competencies - one or more of the following certifications desired:
      • NetApp certified Storage Administrator or Professional
      • Isilon Certified Support Professional
      • Storage +
    • Experience with enterprise technologies currently in use including: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, JIRA, ServiceNow, VMware vSphere
    • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing requirements with a flexible and creative approach to brainstorming, troubleshooting, and problem solving
    • Ability to effectively and confidently communicate – in writing and presentations – complex topics and procedures with team members and all levels of customer stakeholders
    • Must meet all requirements for obtaining and maintaining a Public Trust Clearance
