    Duties & Responsibilities

    Medical Science & Computing is searching for a Systems Architect to support enterprise information technology support teams at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Provide IT architectural expertise and leadership, facilitating the design and implementation of cutting-edge, enterprise-level solutions to include technologies, processes, and services.
    • Drive architectural discussions with internal customers in support of business requirements gathering, analysis, and design while supporting effective and efficient operational support and total cost of ownership issues/decisions.
    • Assess current architecture and existing applications to identify integration issues, capability gaps, areas for improvement, and recommend actions/solutions.
    • Establish and maintain a robust technology stack that supports mission-critical needs and ongoing innovation and improvement while also minimizing operational costs.
    • Maintain knowledge of industry trends and relationships with key vendors to identify candidates both for exploration/adoption and retirement/replacement for infrastructure roadmap planning.
    • Provide technical oversight for key projects and programs, working with highly skilled agile teams to design, develop, test, implement, and support technical solutions across a full-stack of development tools and technologies.
    • Collaborate with developers, engineers, and other subject matter experts to solve integration challenges, automate repetitive tasks, and develop supporting documentation.
    • Work with Security to ensure adequate hardening, security planning, maintenance, and DR/COOP preparations; complete SA&A/ATO paperwork and processes; work through POA&M items; and maintain secure posture throughout infrastructure/system lifecycles.
    • Create and maintain technical documentation of recommendations and solutions; write specifications, how-to documentation, test plans, test reports, and best-practice white papers; provide training for developers, systems operations, and service desk personnel.
    • Raise risks, issues, and exceptions; devise clear mitigation and communication strategies; follow-through to resolution.

     

     

    Requirements

     

    Basic Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or other related business, scientific, or technical discipline
    • 10+ years of experience in a senior technical/architect role demonstrating the technical design and practical implementation of complex infrastructure solutions in an enterprise environment implementing complex technology environments
    • Technical certifications that demonstrate well-rounded and advanced knowledge and skills in Windows, Linux, VMware, Databases, Storage, Cloud services, DR/COOP, etc.
    • Experience with cloud services, infrastructure as code, microservices, containers and related tools and technologies – to include tools such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, GIT, Jenkins, Ant, Maven, Artifactory, Docker, Tomcat, PHP, JIRA, ServiceNow, etc.
    • Demonstrated understanding of and experience implementing and improving processes within an ITIL-based environment; ITIL Foundation certification required; ITIL Expert certification preferred
    • Excellent organization and technical project management skills using both traditional and agile methodologies; familiarity with IT project governance and HHS Enterprise Project Life Cycle (EPLC); PMP certification preferred
    • Experience with technology product evaluation, selection, acquisition and deployment processes
    • Excellent customer service skills in working with customer leads and stakeholders and helping end users with tasks such as data transfers, restores, and permissions management
    • Ability to effectively and confidently communicate – in writing and presenting – complex topics and procedures with team members and all levels of customer stakeholders
    • Thorough documentation and technical writing skills; experience preparing technical design, implementation, system administration and operational documentation
    • Ability to work with incomplete and evolving requirements, adapting to changes with a flexible and creative approach to brainstorming, troubleshooting, and problem solving
    • Ability to work collaboratively within cross-functional operations-focused teams
    • Ability to meet all requirements for obtaining and maintaining a Public Trust Clearance
