    Duties & Responsibilities

    Medical Science & Computing is searching for a Senior Systems Engineer to provide comprehensive deployment and operations support for enterprise Linux systems at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). 

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Lead server provisioning, maintenance, and overall support functions for application, database, file and print, HPC, and web server needs across development, quality assurance, staging, and production environments; support servers and software from multiple vendors including Windows, CentOS, and cloud solutions.
    • Assess and monitor server systems infrastructure to support operational needs and ensure appropriate health, scalability, availability, reliability, security, and continuity; contribute to strategic planning for growth, optimization, and maintenance of highly efficient networks of shared computing resources and data.
    • Manage physical and virtual resources to ensure appropriate availability and capacity; leverage data from performance monitoring tools to make decisions on server resource allocation; plan and implement modifications including expansion or contraction of underlying cluster resources and any adjustments to RAM, processors, disk space, disk type, and input/output speed as appropriate and in accordance with approved change requests.
    • Work with systems owners throughout diverse user communities to provide hosting support to include server provisioning (physical, virtual, and cloud), deployments, systems administration, and technical consultations for physical, virtual, and cloud server solutions.
    • Manage server infrastructure technology stack; work with system owners to communicate changes and plan/facilitate migrations in advance of vendor sunset dates.
    • Work closely with Security Team to manage and maintain server security; analyze activity and review access permissions with system owners; and recommend security standards and enhancements to ensure data confidentiality, availability, and integrity; audit servers to assess and remediate compliance status and issues.
    • Monitor infrastructure, systems operations, and critical application services 24/7; provide information and statistics relevant to system limits on capacity, data storage, system utilization, etc.; respond to critical outages and restore services within agreed upon service levels.
    • Perform and validate operating system, firmware, and application patches and updates on server infrastructure.
    • Respond to and resolve problems with server infrastructure – including equipment, software, processes, and services – incorporating vendor support as needed.
    • Develop and maintain custom scripts and stored procedures to automate repetitive tasks and improve consistency in operations and maintenance activities.
    • Develop comprehensive disaster recovery (DR) and continuity of operations (COOP) plans; perform quarterly tests for server infrastructure in accordance with customer policies to ensure data integrity and resource availability.
    • Provide hardware and software configuration management, change management, knowledge management, and quality management in accordance with customer standards; create and maintain appropriate levels of documentation and reporting for each.
    • Support lifecycle management activities involving procurement, maintenance, retirement, and surplus of servers.
    • Promote awareness of server systems status, notifying federal staff and users of any interruptions, outages, or service downgrades and communicating regular updates through resolution.
    • Participate in enterprise working groups to advocate for customer requirements and contribute to organization best practices and standards.
    • Participate in on-call rotation for off-hours support of infrastructure, systems operations, and critical applications services





    • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or other related business, scientific, or technical discipline
    • 10+ years of experience support Windows and/or Linux server systems
    • Possess technical certifications to demonstrate expertise including one or more of the following:
      • Linux Foundation Certified Engineer
      • Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert – Windows Server and/or Cloud
      • VMware VCP (DCV and/or CMA tracks)
    • ITIL v3 Foundation or higher level certification preferred
    • Experience and proficiency in using the latest versions of tools such as Turbonomics, SolarWinds, HPE Site Scope, HPE OneView, VMWare vSphere, Windows, CentOS, Satellite, SpaceWalk, Puppet
    • Extensive knowledge and experience in developing scripts using bash, korn, Perl, Python, Ruby, PHP, Java, and/or Powershell

    Passion and skill for continuous learning and improvement

    • Experience with hardware and software for networking; distributed computing; virtualization; large-scale, high-performance storage systems; databases; and cloud computing (Amazon Web Services, Google, Microsoft Azure)
    • Experience managing work tasks via tools such as JIRA and ServiceNow
    • Ability to effectively and confidently communicate – in writing and presentations – complex topics and procedures with team members and all levels of customer stakeholders
    • Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail
    • Enthusiastic, proactive, positive attitude with great listening skills, high integrity, and a keen sense of customer service
    • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing requirements with a flexible and creative engineering-focused approach to brainstorming, troubleshooting, and problem solving
    • Willingness to travel locally within the Montgomery and Frederick counties in Maryland
    • Willingness to work outside of normal business hours as needed for maintenance, on-call coverage, incident response, etc.
    • Ability to meet all requirements for obtaining and maintaining a Public Trust Clearance
