    Duties & Responsibilities

    Medical Science & Computing is searching for a Senior Network Engineer to provide comprehensive network support for the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

     

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Design, install, configure, manage, and improve wired local area networks - adding, modifying, or removing network infrastructure components such as switches, load balancers, NetFlow sensors, IDS sensors, NAC appliances, and VLANs.
    • Provide installation, configuration, change management, continuous monitoring and general management of enterprise network connectivity, firewalls, and load balancing to ensure network capacity, availability, and uptime in accordance with customer performance requirements.
    • Implement and maintain tools such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems (IDS), Security Information and Event Monitoring (SIEM), and Network Access Control (NAC).
    • Monitor systems for availability and provide alerts if systems are down; serve as first responder to all alerts, remediating non-application issues and supporting application teams in performance tuning and troubleshooting issues related to network usage.
    • Provide strategic planning support for growth and optimization of network and switching infrastructure; make recommendations on extending capabilities and incorporating cloud and emerging technologies.
    • Work with Security to provide the security, performance, availability, redundancy, and auditing required to meet customer expectations and comply with Government mandates such as the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA).
    • Maintain and support expansion of IP v4 & v6 subnet architectures; provide IP Address Management Services for users and stakeholders, assigning static IPs as required and implementing approved change and retirement requests.
    • Provide onsite and remote support to deploy and manage network and switching infrastructure working with vendor support as needed to resolve issues.
    • Perform and validate software and firmware patches and updates on switching infrastructure.
    • Respond to user requests for LAN drops, port activations, network consultations, etc. within SLA targets.
    • Review and assess network performance; troubleshoot and resolve issues as required, and propose and implement changes aimed at continuous improvement.
    • Document standard operating procedures (SOPs), overall service structure and objectives, service inventory, risks and mitigations, and resource plans.
    • Report on daily equipment status, anomalies, availability and up time percentages, and any outages relevant to network infrastructure.
    • Track industry trends and maintain knowledge of new technologies to better serve the enterprise's architecture needs.
    • Serve as a key member of the senior technical leadership team; plan, prioritize and manage highly complex projects, operations, service requests, and routine assignments.
    • Coordinate work assignments and provide technical oversight in support of fellow Network Engineers, monitoring schedules and work quality.
    • Participate in on-call rotation for off-hours support.

     

    Requirements

     

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or other related business, scientific, or technical discipline
    • 10+ years of experience supporting network systems – using tools such as the Extreme Networks Suite (formerly NetSight®); F5 BigIQ; Infoblox DNS, DHCP, and IPAM (DDI); Cacti; Reporting Appliance; Network Insight; and IPAM for Microsoft – in a fast-paced, complex 24/7 enterprise environment
    • Possess one of the following certifications:
      • Extreme Certified Expert
      • Extreme Certified Architect
    • Experience with hardware and software for networking; distributed computing; virtualization; large-scale, high-performance storage systems; databases; and cloud computing (Amazon Web Services, Google, Microsoft Azure)
    • Experience managing work tasks via tools such as JIRA and ServiceNow
    • Ability to effectively and confidently communicate – in writing and presentations – complex topics and procedures with team members and all levels of customer stakeholders
    • Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail
    • Enthusiastic, proactive, positive attitude with great listening skills, high integrity, and a keen sense of customer service
    • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing requirements with a flexible and creative engineering-focused approach to brainstorming, troubleshooting, and problem solving
    • Willingness to travel locally within the Montgomery and Frederick counties in Maryland
    • Willingness to work outside of normal business hours as needed for maintenance, on-call coverage, incident response, etc.
    • Ability to meet all requirements for obtaining and maintaining a Public Trust Clearance

     

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience working within the NIH, working with the Center for Information Technology (CIT) for connectivity via the NIH network backbone
    • ITIL v3 Foundation or higher level certification
