    MSC is currently searching for a BSL4 Laboratory Assistant to support the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This opportunity is full-time, and it is on site in Hamilton MT.

    Duties & Responsibilities

    The successful candidate will perform routine daily and weekly maintenance and housekeeping activities outside and inside BSL-4 laboratories.

    • These duties will include assisting facilities personnel with cleaning laboratory door seal gaskets and help with door gasket replacement when necessary
    • Perform preventive maintenance of lab equipment and incubators inside BSL-4
    • Operation of autoclaves and transport of sterilized waste to the loading dock
    • Assist with laboratory cleaning and keeping accurate daily records
    • Routine maintenance of eyewash/shower stations
    • Check oxygen cylinders for our anesthesia machines and replace cylinders as necessary
    • Maintain cleaning and disinfectant reagents and chemical shower stock solution and replenish as necessary
    • Autoclaving and removal of soiled laundry and restocking clean laundry

    During periodic shutdowns of containment areas the candidate will assist with the duties associated with the decontamination process.

    • This will include cleaning spaces and equipment moving operations and helping set up the decontamination equipment and chemicals.
    • Following decontamination of animal rooms, procedure areas, and laboratory suites you will assist with paraformaldehyde neutralization residue cleanup using ammonia and water.
    • The technician will also replace animal room filters and maintain a filter inventory records.
    • Assist with BSL-3 shutdowns in Bldg. 28.

    On a less routine basis the candidate will:

    • Perform initial suit integrity tests of new containment suits.
    • Be trained to assist with minor lab procedures
    • Help with annual property inventory
    • Assist with the autoclaving and transport of carcasses to the incinerator.
    • Attend and actively participate in weekly and monthly operational and logistics meetings.

    Requirements

     

    • Position requires access to Select Agents and Clearance for Select Agents
    • Must pass background check for this type of investigation – Tier 3 secret level investigation (formerly an ANACI – level 2) and Security Risk Assessment through the FBI
    • Must be able to physically wearing a high containment suit and able to use our breathing air system
    • Workers must receive a medical evaluation and clearance to participate in the Biosurety Program (BSP). The medical evaluation provides an opportunity to learn about workers’ personal medical conditions that may place them at increased risk for either sustaining an injury or an adverse outcome following an injury. In addition, the visit permits the OMS healthcare provider to provide recommended immunizations and counseling for the proposed work2
    • All training required for lab space access authorization will be provided by NIH. Working in a lab space atmosphere involves adhering to stringent safety procedures, wearing complex, specialized personal protective equipment, and following complex Standard Operating Procedures for entry, exit and decontamination. Contractor must be able to successfully pass the security background investigation.
