    MSC is currently searching for a Veterinary Research Scientist to support the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This opportunity is full-time, and it is on site in Bethesda, MD

    Duties & Responsibilities

    Assist in conducting experiments designed to test new vaccines and therapeutics for Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. NIAID has developed models of infection in medium sized animal models conducted inside an Animal Biological Safety Laboratory - level 3 (ABSL-3). Procedures required during the experiment will include use of a bronchoscope, blood draws, BAL’s, medical imaging, drug administration, anesthesia, adverse effect assessment, necropsy and tissue collection. 

    • Monitor and recover anesthetized NHPs and rabbits for procedures, including PET/CT scans
    • Provide critical care and intervention of an anesthetized patient, knowing when there is an issue and how to correct it.
    • Perform blood draws, catheter placement, intubation, injections, BALs, and other technical needs in NHPs and rabbits.
    • Extensive performance of surgery/necropsies and disease assessments.
    • Process bloods and tissues according to specific needs of multiple experiments.
    • Maintain accurate animal records and documentations associated with technical procedures of the animals
    • Manipulate infectious and radioactive NHPs and rabbits in a safe and proficient manner
    • Attachment of monitoring probes for respiratory gating, temperature, blood CO2 and oxygen concentration to animals and correct/replicable positioning of animals on the scanner bed.
    • Maintenance of radioactivity usage and disposal records; understanding and adherence to NIH radiation usage policies/procedures and safety guidelines. Act as authorized user of radiation.
    • Manipulate infectious and radioactive NHPs and rabbits in a safe and proficient manner
    • Clearly communicate any changes in animals’ health status to facility veterinarian and appropriate team members
    • Run/Use centrifuge, CBC machine, Chemistry machine, i-STAT, glucometer and other equipment and provide results to appropriate personnel
    • Provide feedback on methods and technical procedures to improve upon, where applicable 


    • Extensive knowledge of medications used in veterinary medicine, acceptable routes of administration and drug calculations.  
    • Training in surgery or extensive practice in necropsy procedures and an excellent knowledge of primate anatomy
    • Must have experience doing technical manipulations such as placing IV catheters, endotracheal intubation, femoral bleeds, handling and restraint, BAL’s, anesthesia induction, maintenance and recovery, necropsy or surgery.
    • Effective and clear communication skills and the ability to work in a high stress environment
    • Knowledge and prior experience with non-human primates (NHP) in ABSL-3 setting preferred
    • Prior NHP handling experience required.
    • Ability to work in a team following SOPs and protocol requirements
    • Willingness to work in an area where radioactivity and x-rays will be present
    • Must be able to use computers to maintain excellent records in excel and other general programs
    • Willing to work flexible hours and occasional weekends
    • Must be able to pass extensive background check and Public Trust 5 clearance
    • DVM or MS degree preferred; Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) with additional certifications strongly preferred, RLAT or RVT/LVT as examples.
